Away - 2D Platformer

Final Project for GAM 181 - Intro to Unity (and also first fully designed game!)

Artist Statement and Documentation:

"Away" is a short 2D Exploration Platformer where you play as a dog who is trying to look for their owner. You have to dodge spikes, avoid falling into water, and find where your special human is! 

This is the first game I have ever actually produced, so there is a lot that's left to be desired. I had a small list of ideas for a game, and I thought this could be the easiest to produce with the time and knowledge I have currently. I initially started with creating the basics of the map and controls of the character. I then added moving platforms (with the help of a few tutorials) that worked surprisingly well! I designed and added sprites and animations for the main character, however implementing the animations were a bit of a struggle. After turning in the initial project, I added a new sewer level and added a definitive ending where you can find the owner. I also finally added damage and knockback with the spike traps. There were some things I didn't have time to implement, such as adding a health bar (even though I made the "hp" little bones!) because the damage from the spikes weren't consistent. I also had music for the sewer level made, but wasn't able to add it due to time constraints.  However, I was still able to make a general tune for all the areas and I think it came out great!

Overall, I am incredibly happy with how this came out. I find it aesthetically pleasing, and it was a great way for me to test out my new found coding skills! I also think this game was well thought out enough for me to actually come back to it and continually work on it. I can add more levels, implement puzzles, maybe NPCs? I think I'd also want to add some more fun animations since that was fun to make! I'll definitely come back to this to fix the little mistakes and clean up the jank.
